Wakeboard Size Chart: Board, Bindings, Vest & Helmet

Board size calculator

Suggested cable board length 138–144 cm

Approximate, based on typical charts — brands differ slightly; confirm with the shop or coach.

Wakeboard size is chosen mainly by rider weight: lighter riders use shorter boards and heavier riders use longer ones. As a rough guide, a 60-80 kg adult rides a board of about 134-140 cm, and a rider over about 90 kg rides 142 cm or more. Your riding style and the brand's own chart can shift that by a few centimetres.

This wakeboard size chart covers board length, cable vs boat boards, bindings, helmets and vests, and whether to rent or buy in Thailand. Use the interactive calculator on this page to get a suggested size from your weight and level.

Wakeboard size chart by weight

These are typical industry ranges. Each brand publishes its own chart, and models within a brand can differ, so always check the manufacturer's numbers before buying.

Rider weight Approx. weight (lb) Typical board length
Under 45 kg Under 100 lb 115-130 cm (kids' boards)
45-60 kg 100-130 lb 128-134 cm
55-75 kg 120-165 lb 132-138 cm
70-90 kg 155-200 lb 136-142 cm
85-105 kg 185-230 lb 140-146 cm
Over 100 kg Over 220 lb 144 cm and up

Ranges overlap on purpose. If you fall between two sizes, use these rules of thumb:

  • Go longer if you are a beginner, ride mostly at cable speed on flat water, or want softer landings. A longer board is more stable, floats better at the start and is more forgiving.
  • Go shorter if you want to spin easily, ride a lot of obstacles, or prefer a loose, playful feel.

Using the calculator

Enter your weight and level in the calculator on this page. It suggests a length range from the chart above and nudges it longer for beginners and shorter for park-focused riders. Treat it as a starting point and confirm with the brand's chart or the park shop.

Cable boards vs boat boards

Most riding in Thailand happens at cable parks, so it is worth knowing how cable boards differ from boat boards. Read more in cable vs boat wakeboarding.

Feature Cable board Boat board
Flex Usually softer, for pressing and absorbing obstacles Usually stiffer, for pop off the boat's wake
Base Thick, grind-resistant base to survive rails and boxes Lighter base, not designed for sliders
Fins Small or moulded fins; many riders remove them Larger removable fins for tracking behind the boat
Edges Often detuned or rounded so they catch less on features Sharper edges for hard cuts
Rocker Often continuous for smooth, predictable riding Often 3-stage for more pop

Hybrid boards try to do both and are a sensible first purchase if you might ride behind a boat as well.

Bindings sizing

Bindings follow your shoe size, but sizing varies by brand.

  • Open-toe bindings cover a range, such as EU 40-45. They suit beginners, shared boards and rental fleets. This is what you will usually get at a Thai park.
  • Closed-toe bindings fit like a boot in one size. They give better control and are common on riders' own setups.
  • Fit: your heel should stay down when you lean forward, with no painful pressure points. Toes can touch the end of closed-toe boots but should not be curled.
  • Stance width: usually about shoulder width. Most beginners use a small, equal angle on both feet (often around 9-15 degrees outward).

Try bindings on wet if you can. Liners loosen slightly in the water.

Helmets and vests

Helmets

Choose a water-sports helmet with drainage. It should sit level just above your eyebrows and not move when you shake your head. Helmets are recommended for everyone and strongly recommended on obstacles. Some parks include them; at Thai Wake Park Lumlukka and ESC Thai Wake Park a helmet costs 60 THB per day if it is not part of your package (as of October 2026).

Impact vest vs life jacket

Type Main purpose Who uses it
Life jacket / buoyancy aid Keeps you afloat, even if you are tired or stunned Beginners, kids, weak swimmers; provided by parks
Impact vest Protects ribs and back on falls, adds some flotation Experienced riders who swim well
CE-marked impact vest Impact vest that also meets a European buoyancy standard Riders who want a slim vest with tested flotation

A vest should be snug: when someone pulls up on the shoulders, it should not ride up past your chin. Cable parks in Thailand require a vest on the water, so if you are unsure, use the life jacket the park gives you. See our safety and etiquette guide.

Renting vs buying in Thailand

What parks include

Most Thai parks include a beginner board and a vest with your ticket, and many add a helmet. For example, Taco Lake includes a vest, helmet and beginner board or kneeboard; Phuket Wake Park includes a wakeboard, vest and helmet; and WakeGarden Wake Park includes a board, vest, helmet and handle. Check the full list in our price guide.

Upgrade rentals

Once you can ride the full cable, a better board makes a real difference. At Lumlukka and ESC, as of October 2026:

Rental 2 hours 4 hours Day
Intermediate board 500 THB 700 THB 1,000 THB
Wakeskate 300 THB 400 THB 700 THB
Helmet 60 THB per day

Other parks may rent upgraded boards too; confirm with the park.

When buying makes sense

  • Rent if you are on holiday, riding a few times a year, or still learning to stand up.
  • Buy if you ride regularly, have moved on to obstacles, or want bindings that fit perfectly. Regulars often start with their own bindings and helmet, then add a board.
  • Buy in Thailand? Some larger parks, including Lumlukka, ESC, Phuket Wake Park and Thai Wake Park Pattaya, have on-site shops. Stock and prices vary, so check with the shop.

FAQ

What size wakeboard do I need for 70 kg?

Most charts put a 70 kg rider at about 134-140 cm. Choose the longer end if you are a beginner and the shorter end if you want to spin and ride obstacles.

Is a longer wakeboard easier for beginners?

Generally yes. A longer board is more stable and floats better at the start, which helps when you are learning.

Can I use a boat wakeboard at a cable park?

You can ride on flat water, but most parks discourage boat boards on obstacles because the base and fins are not built for rails and boxes. Ask staff first.

Do I need my own gear at Thai wake parks?

No. Most parks include a beginner board and vest, and many include a helmet. Better boards can be rented at some parks.

What is the difference between an impact vest and a life jacket?

A life jacket is built to keep you afloat. An impact vest is mainly for protection and gives less flotation. Beginners and weak swimmers should use a life jacket.
